The Greene County Sheriff's Office implemented its own SWAT (or Special Weapons and Tactics) Team in 2009 which became active in 2010. The team has up to 16 operators who are highly dedicated, actively train and make several personal sacrifices to ensure the safety of the citizens of Greene County who they serve. They volunteer their time to attend specialized training which are both physically and mentally challenging. The Team engages in several high risk operation deployments from search warrants to barricaded subjects to protection details; they average 50 service calls annually.
Members from various departments within the GCSO make up the SWAT Team to include Corrections Officers, Patrol Deputies and Reserve Deputies. Potential members undergo a vigorous testing process which requires the Sheriff's approval for participation and they need to receive high evaluations during the testing phase which offers physical challenges and firearms qualifications.
