Because the courtroom is an unfamiliar place for a child, it can be an intimidating
and anxiety producing place. The aim of Kids Court is to inform child witnesses about
what to expect in court and to lessen any worries or fears parents may have about
their children going to court.
Kids Court consists of two parts; one part for the children and the other part for
parents. Both child and parent will gain a better understanding of the roles of
different people in court and of courtroom procedures and both have the chance to
express their feelings about going to court. In addition, relaxation techniques are
taught to help child witnesses deal with stress. Parents are also introduced to
relaxation techniques to help reduce their own anxiety and to learn how to better
prepare their children child for court.
